When should you use single or double quotation marks?

There are two styles of quotation marks: “double quotes” and ‘single quotes’.

Use double quotes for direct speech: “I have a major announcement to make,” said the managing director.

Use single quotes in headings: Waiting lists vanish – hospital beds are available ‘on demand’

And for quotes within quotes: “Mr Jones said it was ‘terrific’,” said Jack.

And for nicknames: Mr John ‘Dusty’ Miller

Don’t use quotes for names of ships, titles of books, plays or films. Use italics instead. We went to see Gone With the Wind.

And don’t use quotes if you are reporting indirect speech. eg: The board said no to our request.
